Ayurvedic View on Respiratory Disorders (Śvāsa Roga) In Ayurveda, respiratory disorders are collectively described as Śvāsa Roga, conditions arising from imbalance in one or more of the three doṣas—Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha. Each doṣha affects the respiratory system in a distinct way, producing characteristic symptoms and requiring specific therapeutic approaches. Respiratory diseases affect the airways and lungs, ranging from acute infections to chronic conditions. Major types include asthma, COPD (emphysema, chronic bronchitis), pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung cancer. Other conditions include pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and acute viral infections like COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. Common Respiratory Diseases and Conditions Interstitial Lung Disease: Pulmonary fibrosis, Sarcoidosis. Pulmonary Vascular Disease: Pulmonary embolism, Pulmonary hypertension. Airway/Structural Diseases: Bronchiectasis, Cystic fibrosis, Lung cancer, Mesothelioma. Other Disorders: Sleep apnea, Pneumothorax (collapsed lung), Pleural effusion. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Asthma: Chronic airway inflammation. Infections: Pneumonia, Tuberculosis (TB), Influenza (flu), COVID-19, RSV, Bronchitis.
