Ayurvedic Prenatal Massage Therapy

Description

45 minutes: $150 each therapy

Massage has been used for thousands of years to relieve stress, relax the muscles, and improve general health – and that remains true during pregnancy. While the essential benefits of massage therapy remain the same, prenatal massage requires different techniques to insure the safety of both the mother and the baby. With a few precautions (after the first trimester, you will need a note from your doctor).

Prenatal Massage benefits include, lowered anxiety, decreased back & leg pain, improved sleep, decreased levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine, increased levels of serotonin and dopamine, decreased levels of cortisol (a stress indicator common in depressed pregnant patients), and an overall improvement in mood. The client is provided with  extra pillows or sheets in order  to make her more comfortable during the session.

Prenatal massage is a specialized therapeutic massage designed to support the physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy. When performed by a qualified prenatal massage therapist, it can provide significant relief from common pregnancy discomforts while promoting relaxation and overall well-being. Safety precautions and appropriate modifications are always essential to ensure the comfort and health of both mother and baby.

Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Pain Relief

  • Helps reduce lower back pain, hip discomfort, sciatica, neck tension, and shoulder pain commonly experienced during pregnancy.
  • Eases muscle soreness and improve flexibility.

Reduces Swelling

  • Promotes healthy circulation and lymphatic drainage.
  • Helps minimize edema (swelling) in the hands, feet, ankles, and legs.

Hormonal Balance and Emotional Well-Being

  • Lowers stress hormone (cortisol) levels.
  • Increases serotonin and dopamine levels, helping to reduce anxiety, stress, and symptoms of depression.
  • Encourages emotional balance and relaxation.

Improved Sleep

  • Promotes deeper and more restful sleep.
  • Helps relieve nighttime leg cramps and muscular discomfort that may interfere with sleep quality.

Safety Guidelines and Modifications

Proper Positioning

  • After the first trimester, pregnant women should avoid lying flat on their backs for extended periods.
  • Side-lying positioning with supportive pillows is typically used to prevent pressure on major blood vessels and ensure maximum comfort.

Modified Massage Techniques

  • Deep tissue work, vigorous pressure, cross-fiber friction, and strong percussion techniques are generally avoided on the legs to reduce the risk of disturbing a potential blood clot.
  • Gentle, slow, and soothing strokes are preferred.

Specialized Training

  • Always seek treatment from a therapist who has specialized training and certification in prenatal massage therapy.

Contraindications and Precautions

While prenatal massage is generally safe for most healthy pregnancies, certain conditions require caution or medical clearance.

Massage Should Be Avoided or Performed Only with Physician Approval If You Have:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Preeclampsia
  • Placenta previa
  • Placental abruption
  • Other serious placental complications

Medical Clearance Required
Consult your obstetrician, midwife, or healthcare provider before receiving prenatal massage if you have:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • High-risk pregnancy
  • History of miscarriage
  • Severe swelling
  • Hypertension or other significant medical concerns

First Trimester Considerations

  • Some practitioners may postpone massage during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and morning sickness can be more pronounced during this period.
  • If massage is provided during the first trimester, gentle techniques and careful monitoring are recommended.
