This is a special type of Kerala Ayurveda Therapy – Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein medicated powders are made into poultice and used for giving fomentation.

If you are experiencing back or neck pain, this therapy is designed to relax, restore and rejuvenate, using a technique of massage, marma stimulation and if needed, local application of herbal poultice or a dough dam filled with herbal oils.

Back, neck, and shoulder therapy—which includes warm herbal oil massage, marma stimulation and gentle yoga postures —targets musculoskeletal pain and stiffness. The main benefits are reduced chronic pain, improved joint mobility, and posture correction. However, therapy is contraindicated for acute fractures, tumors, severe osteoporosis, and active infections.

  • Heat/Ice Therapy: Applying hot or cold packs to numb the area or reduce inflammation.

Contraindications & Risks

Therapy must be avoided or modified significantly if you have any of the following:

  • Acute trauma: Recent fractures, dislocations, or acute soft tissue injuries.
  • Spinal instability: Conditions such as severe osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ligamentous rupture.
  • Vascular or neurological issues: Vertebral artery abnormalities, tumors, or acute myelopathy.
  • Medical procedures: Recent neck/back surgery or ongoing anticoagulant (blood thinning) therapy
