Circadian Medicine: Aligning Dinacharya with Modern Biological Clocks

Overview:
Explore the intersection of Ayurvedic Dinacharya (daily routine) and modern circadian biology, examining how the timing of sleep, waking, meals, exercise, work, meditation, and relaxation can influence physiological rhythms and overall health.

The session can connect traditional Ayurvedic concepts such as Brahma Muhurta, appropriate meal timing, daily cleansing, Abhyanga, yoga, meditation, and sleep routines with contemporary understanding of the circadian clock, light–dark cycles, cortisol and melatonin rhythms, metabolism, the gut microbiome, and chronobiology.

Suggested Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the basic principles of circadian rhythms and biological clocks.
  2. Explore Dinacharya as a traditional framework for synchronizing daily activities with natural rhythms.
  3. Compare Ayurvedic timing concepts with modern chronobiology and chronomedicine.
  4. Examine the role of morning light, sleep, meal timing, physical activity, and stress management in circadian alignment.
  5. Discuss how circadian disruption may affect metabolic health, digestion, sleep, mood, immunity, and overall wellness.
